Learn more about me becoming a musician, writing songs, getting into recording, mixing and mastering and listening to the artists.
When I was about seven years old, I played guitar for the first time. Then, when I was fourteen, I owned my first guitar. I got it from my uncle Ben who was also a musician and a great inspiration for me back then. It was an acoustic guitar, but I wanted to make it sound like an electric, so I stuck a cheap microphone onto it and cranked the input level of my dad’s old tape recorder, to get some fuzzy distortion.
Writing songs
After high school I started my first metal-band with some friends: Mangled. It was a sixteen year ride. We quit in 2005. After that I started the projects Spitting Nails, The Newheads and Hacksaw, because I wanted to write different types of songs. Therefore I also joined a real band again: Battersea.
Getting into recording, mixing and mastering
I own a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering but I became much more interested in audio engineering when Mangled recorded their first demo. The guy we worked with had a mobile recording rig and used an 8 track Tascam Portastudio. I was sold. Soon after that I bought the first digital studio workstation: Roland VS880. From there I started my journey.
In the first years I learned a lot from experimentation and trial and error and reading recording related magazines and books. Later, in the youtube era, I decided to invest in several paid online courses.
Nowadays I help bands achieve their music production goals. I listen to what they love about their, or other people’s music and I try to enhance those aspects in the sounds I’m working on. Wether it is guitar tone, snare punch, bass power, roominess…anything really.
I think it is important to inspire the artist by educating them about the possibilities and how and when to apply them. Then Let the artist decide!
